  17. <p>     As the Rodney King case went to the jury last week, Los
  18. Angeles residents were keeping a wary eye on another case
  19. involving a videotaped beating: the assault on white truck driver
  20. Reginald Denny by a group of black men at the outset of last
  21. year's riot. Although the parallels between the two incidents are
  22. largely superficial, many African Americans tend to equate them.
  23. The case against the three men accused in the Denny assault has
  24. become a symbol of the disparity between how whites and blacks
  25. are treated by the criminal-justice sysMany Angelenos fear that a
  26. volatile situation will be created if the four officers are
  27. exonerated and the Denny defendants are found guilty. Thus a
  28. ruling last week by Superior Court Judge John Ouderkirk
  29. produced a collective, if temporary, sigh of relief. He
  30. postponed the Denny trial until July, which will give the
  31. defense time to bolster its claim that the prosecution is
  32. racially motivated. The defense points to what it describes as
  33. a decade-long pattern of discriminatory prosecutions. If the
  34. judge agrees, the case will be dismissed. If it goes to trial,
  35. as now seems likely, the videotape will be a key piece of
  36. evidence.
